Deleting and restoring

Editorial content isn’t deleted immediately. It’s first marked for deletion. The deletion happens when the change is published. This provides an opportunity to restore content deleted in error.

If workflow is enabled the deletion may be delayed until approved.

The principles and procedures in this section apply to all editorial content, including pages, assets, contacts, categories and any similar content type made available by a content app.

Deleting

When content is deleted it’s permanently removed from both instances and can’t be restored.

To delete content:

  1. Select the item and click Delete.

  2. Confirm the deletion in the dialog.

  3. The item is marked for deletion and the trash can icon renders next to the name. At this point in time:

    1. A version is created.

    2. You can still restore the item.

  4. Click Publish deletion to complete the deletion process.

    1. If workflow is enabled, the item is sent to a publisher for approval.

    2. If workflow is not enabled, the item is removed from the tree.

Deleting multiple items

You can delete multiple items simultaneously by checking them and executing the Delete action once.

Content dependencies

When you delete a page or asset that’s linked to other pages, a confirmation dialog appears listing where the items are used. This warns you of broken links that will be caused by the deletion.

By default, this functionality is enabled in both the Pages and Assets apps.

The dialog is triggered when you delete the following items:

  • Pages linked to other pages, such as through child-parent relationships or internal teaser components.

  • Assets used in pages.

This ensures that you’re made aware of any dependencies before proceeding with the deletion.

Deleting multiple items confirmation pop-up

Deletion warning dialogs are enabled by default in the Pages and Assets apps.

This means that, by default, dependencies are only checked between pages and assets, not against other content apps. For example, if you delete an asset used in the Tours app, no warning appears. Warnings are only shown when deleting a page or an asset linked to a page.

Your Administrator can configure this functionality to include additional content apps if needed.

Restoring

The Restore previous version action restores an item to the state it had before deletion. You can only restore items that are marked for deletion Trash icon. Once the deletion has been published you can no longer restore the item.

Recursive restore

In the Assets and the Pages apps, the Restore item action restores the whole subtree (recursively). This allows you to recover quickly if you delete a page and its children, or a folder containing assets, by accident.

Recursive restore is only configured by default in the Assets and Pages apps. Other apps restore only the selected item.
